Parakiore Recreation and Sports Centre: New Zealand’s Largest Aquatic and Indoor Recreation Centre
Our work on Parakiore demonstrates Peddle Thorp Architects’ strength in large, technically demanding sports facilities, delivering New Zealand’s largest aquatic and indoor centre through detailed coordination, strategic planning and deep sector expertise.

Parakiore Recreation and Sports Centre is one of the most ambitious community sport infrastructures undertaken in Aotearoa. As the country’s largest aquatic and indoor recreation facility, it demanded exceptional architectural coordination, technical depth and spatial precision.
Peddle Thorp Architects played a significant role in turning this large-scale vision into detailed, buildable reality.

Applying Deep Experience in Large Sport and Aquatic Facilities
With decades of experience delivering major recreation, aquatic and competition-level venues, we brought a structured and analytical approach to the project. Long-span structures, event-ready circulation, specialist environments and complex building systems shaped much of the architectural thinking.
Our team worked across the detailed design of the spaces where accuracy is essential. Pool halls, dry courts, athlete facilities, change areas, spectator zones and back-of-house operations all required careful resolution. Every design decision carried operational consequences, and we focused on ensuring the wider architectural intent translated seamlessly into construction.
Designing for Complexity at Scale
Large recreational precincts introduce significant challenges. Structural performance, moisture control, acoustics, filtration systems, energy efficiency and user movement must operate together as a single, coordinated system.
We concentrated on resolving these intersections and strengthening the building’s internal logic. Clear circulation routes, efficient service integration and practical zoning support both everyday public use and high-performance sporting demands.
The result is a facility that functions well under pressure and remains intuitive for users at every level.

Built for Performance, Longevity and Public Value
The centre is intended to serve Christchurch for generations. Its mix of aquatic, indoor sport and community spaces required a durable, flexible and operationally efficient architectural response.
Our design input emphasised long-term adaptability, robust materials, safe and legible movement patterns and a clear separation between public, athlete and operational domains.
This clarity supports everything from school groups to elite competition, without compromising performance or safety.

Demonstrating Capability in Major Sports Infrastructure
The project reinforces our established capability in large-scale sport and recreation facilities. Across our broader portfolio, we have delivered national aquatic centres, multipurpose arenas, elite training facilities and significant community sports hubs.
This experience allowed us to navigate the complexity of a facility of this scale with confidence and precision.
An Important Asset for Christchurch
As the centre transitions to Christchurch City Council, it moves into its next phase as a vital public asset. We are proud to have contributed to a facility that will enhance participation, performance and wellbeing for decades to come.
