Parakiore Recreation and Sport Centre

This collaborative design between architects Peddle Thorp Architects, Warren and Mahoney Architects and MJMA (MacLennan Jaunkalns Miller Architects), is recognised by Te Kāhui Whaihanga New Zealand Institute of Architects and the Property Council of New Zealand for excellence in commercial, civic and tourism & leisure.

The Parakiore Recreation and Sport Centre is one of the largest indoor sports and aquatic facilities in the Southern Hemisphere. Designed to meet the needs of both high-performance athletes and the local community, Parakiore combines cutting-edge design with extensive recreational, fitness, and wellness offerings, contributing significantly to the revitalisation of Christchurch's city centre.

The facility features multiple indoor pools, including a 50-metre competition pool, a dedicated diving pool, a learn-to-swim pool, and leisure water areas complete with play features for families. Complementing the aquatic facilities are expansive indoor courts for basketball, netball, and volleyball, as well as spaces for fitness training, group exercise, and rehabilitation services. Parakiore’s high-performance training spaces and multi-sport amenities provide a comprehensive environment for athletic development and community engagement.

Sustainability is a design priority of Parakiore, with environmentally friendly materials, energy-efficient systems, and water conservation initiatives integrated throughout. This world-class venue not only aims to support Christchurch's athletic community but also to serve as a central hub for recreation, fostering well-being and social connection for people of all ages and abilities.
