Melbourne Airport Terminal 3 Stage 2 Redevelopment
Tullamarine, Vic

Peddle Thorp Architects led the design for Melbourne Airport Terminal 3 Stage 2 – a continuation of the airport’s long-term strategy to enhance domestic passenger experience and operational efficiency.
Following the completion of Stage 1, which primarily focused on connecting Terminals 3 and 4 at departures level, Stage 3 addresses a critical expansion of arrivals infrastructure. The project delivers a new, larger arrivals hall at ground level with additional baggage carousels, enabling seamless ground-level connectivity between T3 and T4 and supporting Virgin Australia's inbound operations.
Key to the Stage 2 redevelopment is the integration of vertical transport systems, anti-pass back exit lanes, new retail tenancies at both ground and mezzanine levels, and a comprehensive upgrade of the terminal forecourt. The new vertical transport zone and enhanced arrival pathways significantly improve passenger flow, safety, and accessibility.

Peddle Thorp led the project through a comprehensive Detailed Design (DD) phase, building on the outcomes of the earlier schematic design and aligning with evolving stakeholder requirements.
The architectural package covered a wide scope, including coordination of base building services, upgrades to wayfinding, refinement of material and finish selections, and the development of detailed façade systems.
As the scope expanded, the team integrated additional elements such as canopy redesigns, façade enhancements, a public announcement system rollout across Terminals 3 and 4, and a refreshed signage strategy ensuring consistency and operational efficiency throughout the precinct.
Stakeholder feedback, including input from Skybus and APAM, was incorporated into the final documentation, ensuring that all design elements align with broader master planning objectives and the airport’s long-term operational vision.
